The Theory Test
DSA now demands that the Theory Test must be passed before candidates may book a Practical Test.
Before the theory test was introduced test candidates were asked a few questions about the highway code by the Driving Examiner at the end of the practical test . Although test candidates will probably disagree , this was hardly the best method of testing someones knowledge of the Highway Code .So the theory test was introduced and is obviously a more demanding test to pass than before . At present the Theory Test is divided in to 2 sub test's . The first part is a set of multiple choice questions . For cars and motorcycles you'll be asked 50 questions and the pass mark is 43 out of 50 . The second part of the Theory Test is the Hazard Perception Test . The pass mark for the car and motorcycle hazard perception part of the theory test is 44 out of 75 . The Theory Test is conducted at local test centres . Find Nearest Test Centre The multiple choice part is delivered using a touch screen computer and gives the candidate 50 questions , some of which will reqire more than 1 correct answer. So make sure you read the questions thoroughly . The Hazard Perception part records your responses through the use of a computer mouse button .It consists of 14 video clips taken from a drivers/riders view point .As a developing hazard occurs the candidates response time is recorded and marks are awarded accordingly .13 of the clips have a maximum mark of 5 and 1 of the clips has 2 developing hazards with a maximum of 10 points ( 5 for each hazard) . This gives a total of 75 total points for the 14 video clips . Theory test's can be booked online , use this link.www.dsa.gov.uk ( Theory Test) It is essential to prepare thoroughly before attempting the Theory Test . To prepare for both parts of the theory test we recommend that all candidates , regardless of driving experience , use the resource material available .Most candidates will probably use a DVD for their preparation as these contain practice tests for both elements of the theory test . Other resource material is available from most high street book shops and from the DSA official online bookstore . DSA Books ( look in 'DSA_Driving' at the top of the web page). There are many publications regarding the Theory Test , some better than others , however you will only pass if you are thoroughly prepared . Make sure you regularly achieve good pass marks in practice test's for both parts before attempting the real thing.
